CAMBRIDGE - Fire crews are monitoring four underground fires that caused two manhole explosions underneath our campus.
Flames shot to heights of 50 feet, leaving at least 700 NStar customers without power due to the fires. ABP, Holyoke Center, and Cambridge Savings have been closed.
See video here:
The fire was first reported around 2:30 this morning, and flames and smoke continued to spew from at least one manhole on Harvard Square for hours.
A cable malfunction seems to have sparked the fire. Fire crews are unable to extinguish the blaze with water due to close proximity of electrical equipment.
There are no injuries reported.
