In search for next provost, field appears wide open

University President Richard Levin needs someone to help oversee the launch of the West Campus and Yale’s continued investment in the sciences. And, complicating all that, he may need to start thinking about who might follow in his footsteps as Yale’s next president. In many ways, Levin’s choice of the University’s next provost will open a window deep into his plans for the next five years, both for Yale and his own personal career trajectory. Will Levin appoint a scientist, underscoring his commitment to boosting the University’s science reputation? Or will he choose a young, rising star, a Yale alumna who in a few years could be anointed Yale’s 23rd president? Or none of the above?

Investigators seek the 'someone' Jovin referenced in hour before stabbing

In its second revelation to the public in two weeks, a team of investigators probing the 1998 slaying of Yale College senior Suzanne Jovin has announced that it is seeking the identity of an individual to whom Jovin had lent GRE study materials — a potentially critical line of inquiry that lead investigator John Mannion said previous investigators on the case neglected to explore.

The Yale Corporation this weekend authorized the addition of two new residential colleges, officially setting into motion the University's largest expansion since co-education four decades ago. Yale College will grow by about 15 percent as part of the expansion, which University President Richard Levin announced in an e-mail message to the community on Saturday morning. The new colleges are expected to open in 2013. "This expansion,” Levin wrote, “will allow us to make an even greater contribution to society by preparing a larger number of talented and promising students of all backgrounds for leadership and service.”

Ten years ago, Levin presented the Corporation with a list of goals to advance the University over the next decade. Many of them — internationalizing the University and investing in the sciences, for example — would seem obvious to any mildly interested observer of University affairs over the last several years. But what did not surface until very recently was the last item on his list: “Build two new residential colleges.”
