8 Signs Your Child Might Be Gifted

As teachers with special education degrees can tell you, identifying young gifted children can be a bit challenging. In fact, many gifted and talented students are misdiagnosed as “special needs” because their parents or teachers misread the warning signs they’re exhibiting. That’s because most schools aren’t properly equipped to deal with gifted children. Instead, they’re setup with a focus on dealing with the average child.

With that in mind, if you know which signs to look for, you could determine if your child is gifted. Remember, not all gifted children will show these traits and not every child who exhibits some of these traits is gifted. This is merely meant to serve as a starting point for gaining insight into your child’s brain.

1. Short attention span on topics that don’t interest him—Gifted children tend to have a difficult time staying focused on topics they find uninteresting. The child may be restless or fidgety in school when covering these subjects.

2. Hyper focuses on specific topics—While the gifted child may not pay attention to certain topics, he will likely hyper focus on specific subjects that truly interest him. When it comes to these topics, he has an insatiable thirst for knowledge, always asking questions and trying to learn more.

3. Impatient with others less knowledgeable—Gifted children often have little patience for illogical opinions. In school, this can be a problem as the gifted child may criticize other students or make them feel inferior. It’s important that the child learns to respect those who may not be as intelligent as he is.

4. Underperforms in school because it’s too easy—A gifted child doing poorly in school might seem counterintuitive, and that’s one reason many gifted kids get misdiagnosed. However, the reason gifted children can sometimes do badly is because they tune out since everything comes so easily to them. They might find the pace of teaching to be too slow as teachers have to make sure the entire class is learning.

5. Can be very emotional as he sees things differently—If your child seems to be extra sensitive, he very well might be gifted. Gifted children are often more emotional than their peers because they have an overly mature capability for empathy. He could even have trouble sleeping as he worries about bigger problems.

6. Enjoys writing—Children who are gifted and talented may enjoy immersing themselves in writing and reading. The gifted child often excels at writing assignments in school, and he may even do extracurricular writing on his own time to help express his emotions and imagination.

7. Sees himself as different than other kids—If your child sees himself differently from his peers, he may withdraw in social situations and could only have a few friends. Or he could try to act like someone he isn’t just so he’ll fit in.

8. Lots of energy—A gifted child tends to have a high level of energy, especially in the morning. He can often handle multiple projects and activities and still have energy left to burn.

Does your child exhibit any of these signs?

Continuing education is an important part of maintaining learning, especially keeping up to date on new trends within the industry and new techniques which are being used for various tasks. Although most accountants have completed years and years of schooling, there are many courses which can be taken advantage of, including CPE courses for CPAs and shorter classes like Hoven Tax Seminars, which can help to educate an individual on the procedures which are used within various filing situations.

When searching for course that can be taken, consider the achievements that have already been undertaken successfully. For example, many accounting CPE courses require background information in various aspects of taxation and finance, and therefore an individual may be unable to enroll if this information is missing from the application.

Continuing education can be used for the accountant to keep up to date on certain practices within the world of finance and taxation, as there is a constant trend of change which is occurring throughout the global market and new situations which must be learned every single year.

Furthering the education can open the doors to higher wages and additional clients with more in depth needs from their accountant.

There are many, many types of events which require brochures – hundreds and even thousands of brochures are often created for most events. As there are so many brochures which are being printed for various events, those in charge of choosing the company and ensuring that the brochures are printed often try and find the best price available for the printed brochures.

Comparing prices for brochure printing is the most effective way to find the best rates. Prices can be compared by using internet quotes, as well as making phone calls to companies to allow the companies to provide the best rate. Bulk printing, or a high number of brochures and other printings which are being created are often subject to lower prices and reduced rates. This means that ordering additional prints can pay off in the long run.

There are many companies that offer competitive rates for brochure printing. Companies like PSPrint education offer a variety of brochures and other types of printing formats that can be used in an education setting. Through the use of these brochures and other types of prints, schools and other organizations can take advantage of low cost and accurate printing that comes with a myriad of options that can be chosen from.

As well-known media consultant Juan Antonio Giner says on his fun blog, “we need more people newspapers, less building journalism, less institutional newspapers.

People, people, people.”

This is something we want the Voice to focus on. Real Harvard people.

Pretty interesting cover of Zero Hora. Clean and easy to read, yet very attractive and modern.

That’s what we’ll try to achieve with the layout of Voice. Innovative, simple, sexy.

Information Arhitects, a pretty cool group of web consultants (we’ve them mentioned in regards to their “Wiki newspaper” proposal), published a map of all kinds of different trends on the web in 2008.

It’s massive, and includes more than 300 websites. Check out the large pdf version here!

Draft of Student Group Proposal Thus Far <— Click Here to Download

This is a draft of the proposal that we have been working on for the past couple weeks to attain recognition as an official Harvard student group by the Harvard College Student Affairs Committee. Acceptance as an official student group will enable us to apply for and hopefully receive grant money from Harvard. It will also allow us to use the official ‘Harvard’ name in advertising, as well as disseminating information and marketing materials on Harvard campus. We are confident that we will get approved, though we would like to smoothen the rough edges of the proposal; the ultimate hope, as mentioned briefly by Miran, is to use much of these materials for our media kit for potential advertisers and to develop strategic relationships.

When do we plan to launch?

A lot of people have asked us, when do you guys plan to launch this crazy project of yours?

As of now, the plan is to launch our weekly newspaper and interactive website before spring break. That means about a month and a half from today. Is that a realistic timeframe? Well, if we really give our best, it might be.

We’re currently in process of submitting all the documentation required to get approved as a student organization. After that, we’ll devote all of our energies to create a media kit, and develop the visual identity of the newspaper. Also, we’ll soon start marketing the project around the campus, and recruiting all interested students.

A different design

We want The Voice to be very different from all other Harvard publications.

In every single detail: photography, writing, layout, relationship with readers, connection with its online edition, editing etc. Design is one of the areas that we really want to put a lot of effort into, and produce something completely new and fresh.

During this last summer, I worked with a Spanish design company called Cases I Associats. Their small office in Barcelona was amazing. Just what you’d imagine a design studio to look like: large tables with nothing but iMacs on them, a lot of papers and sketches on the floor, people running around with different magazines and newspapers. Check out their portfolio, really cool.

A wiki newspaper?

A web design firm called “Information Architects” produced a case study of what would Washington Post look like if it were to be redesigned as a wiki newspaper / website.

The basic idea is that readers would get more involved in the editorial process, contributing their own content, communicating with editors, and choosing what should be in the next day’s print edition.

To an extent, that’s what we’re trying to do with the Voice. Through our soon-to-be launched website, we want to have the whole Harvard community talking with our writers and editors, contributing their own thouhts and articles, and thus “co-editing” the paper together with the newroom staff.
